mustang is a hardy and graceful naturalized horse of the North American
west. The earliest mustangs descended from Spanish horses brought to
Mexico in the 1500s. Some of these horses escaped and quickly spread
throughout western North America. By 1900 there were an estimated one
million wild Mustangs. They were often viewed as a nuisance in that they
competed with livestock. Many were poisoned or shot. Today, Mustangs
are protected by the Federal Government with a population of between
40,000 to 100,000.
